Looks Like CBS is Itching For a Fight

In a statement, CBS News said it stands by its story.

"This report was not based solely on recovered documents, but rather on a preponderance of evidence, including documents that were provided by unimpeachable sources, interviews with former Texas National Guard officials and individuals who worked closely back in the early 1970s with Colonel Jerry Killian and were well acquainted with his procedures, his character and his thinking," the statement read.

"In addition, the documents are backed up not only by independent handwriting and forensic document experts but by sources familiar with their content," the statement continued. "Contrary to some rumors, no internal investigation is underway at CBS News nor is one planned."

There will be no investigation? Yeah, that's showing a lot of interest to get at the truth. We should all take Rather's word on it. I guess that Killians family - daughter, wife and son - who probably were VERY well aquainted with Killian's thinking and who feel the faked memos totally went against his thinking - are wrong. Hmmm. It is going to be fascinating to see where this goes. My guess is this is going to be a real firestorm.

UPDATE: RatherBiased.com has some interesting comments by Bernard Goldberg, the former CBS correspondent'

"This is the nature of bias in the news. no conspiracies. Rather never said, 'I know these documents are phoney, but I'll go with them anyway.' He would never do that. The problem is too much like-mindedness, too much groupthink. What happened was almost invevitable. Sooner or later, when you live in the bubble, something bad will happen.
