Russert-Powell Kerfuffle

Nice to see someone (Jonah Goldberg) questioning Russert's indignation over the screw up in his interview with Powell. I saw it and it was a little strange but nothing to get upset about it. Yet Russert is now going on and on about how unamerican it was to cut an interview short like that. Hopefully the next interviewee who Russert cuts short from making a point because he has to go to a station break or feels the interview is getting away from him will get equally outraged. Tim, get a grip - you're just not that important and Western civ will continue with or without your interviews, however good they may be (editor's note: I really do like Tim Russert and think he is pretty fair and evenhanded).

UPDATE: Looks like Russert does not hold himself up to the same high standards that he does his guests. I love that it was Brian Lehrer that showed him up. I say again, I like Russert but this really makes him look like a grade A schmuck.

Ok, I've always liked Tim Russert - he's a bright, relatively fair journalist, but between his little hissy-fit over an aide cutting off the Powell interview and this self-aggrandizing quote ... In his keynote speech, Russert described having a private... [Read More]

There's a big difference between a ten minute interview between one journalist and another, and a public figure giving a rare public interview on issues of national and international importance. Powell was clearly being cut off because of the nature of the questioning. This isn't a question of hypocrisy, people. It's so typical of Bush lovers to attack the messenger when you don't like the message...

Jim/Jerry (or whomever you are), get a grip. To turn your silly quote around a bit, typical of ABB (Anyone But Bush) people to think that anyone who questions, even slightly, anything that might look bad for Bush must therefore be a "Bush lover." So sad.

Funny that Brian Lehrer thought it was significant enough that he replayed what was cut off in his Russert interview in the same way Russert did with the taped Powell interview. He replayed it to make a point. Lehrer definitely does not strike me as a Bush lover...however, he does know what goes on behind the scenes during these taped interviews.

Russert's ego just got the best of him and he needs to cut down on his pomposity. He's a good interviewer and I really do like him, but in this case I think he went a little too far in trying to show how horrible and bad those mean Bushies are.

Alex, relax, Jim/Jerry sounds like a card carrying member of the tinfoil hat brigade. Most people reading your post would not jump to the conclusion that you're one a 'em dern Bush lovers ;) It was telling though that Jim/Jerry/whomever did the regular liberal thing of just jumping to the conclusion that you were trying to cover up the evil of Bush by changing the topic just because you criticized someone from the "all knowing" media. However, I gotta say, unlike you, I don't like Russert and this episode just confirmed my low opinion of him. I have a friend who actually worked as a researcher for him for a time and my friend said he was a first class ahole who had a very high and many would say misplaced opinion of himself.
